GYDAC has successfully applied for a grant from England Athletics to deliver a youth-to-young adults recruitment scheme called "Game Changers". We are now charged with signing up twenty to thirty or so 14-25 year and submitting all their names to England Athletics.
HOW DO I REGISTER MY INTEREST?
The Club has been actively canvassing the prospective schools, academies and colleges in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney districts. As the 14-18 year olds eligible to join in add up to many thousands, those really interested in athletics must race to one of the Athletics Club training nights as soon as possible to get Registration forms and further details. This will include Parental Permission forms that must be signed, dated and returned promptly.
WHERE IS THE WELLESLEY STADIUM?
The stadium address is Wellesley Road, Great Yarmouth, NR30 1EY. It is between the Coach Park and the rear of the large hotels on North Drive, off Sandown Road and opposite the entrance to the Waterways. The Stadium is also home to Great Yarmouth Town FC. You can find a map on Facebook.
WHAT ARE THE CLUB TRAINING NIGHTS?
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.45 - 8.15pm.
WHO DO I HAVE TO MEET AND REGISTER WITH?
Steve Austin, the Volunteers Recruitment co-ordinator, will be manning a table at the front of the grandstand, with the forms and further details as required. The forms can be completed on the night, but must be handed in by Thursday, 28 June at the latest. In order to make sure we can meet all prospective applicants Steve will also be there on Wednesday evenings from 7.00 - 8.00pm throughout May.
WHAT TRAINING COURSES ARE ON OFFER?
The Club is seeking recruits that are fond of Athletics first and foremost. They must be willing to attend training nights regularly summer and winter. The courses necessary to gain coaching and/or officiating qualifications are held in the autumn/winter, usually at weekends at various venues TBC. All costs incurred to attend these courses will be met from the England Athletics grant and supplemented if necessary by the Club.
Other courses in "soft skills" such as IT, media and communications, print and publishing, photography and cinematography, first aid, catering and hospitality will be subject to the
support of teachers and lecturers, the nature of the tasks involved and other factors.
WHAT EVENTS AND COMPETITIONS DO THE CLUB ATHLETES TRAIN FOR?
The club athletes can be aged 8 and above, male and female. We aim to coach all the classic athletics events at the Wellesley Stadium from May to September, for League matches, Performance Meetings, school and county championships. In the winter months many athletes also train indoors at the Great Yarmouth Charter Academy on Monday evenings. Others run outdoors along the north promenade (Mondays) and train at the Wellesley Stadium (Thursdays). Many athletes run in road races and cross country competitions in the winter season.
HOW LONG ARE THE TRAINING COURSES?
That depends on the individual nature of the events and/or courses. The "Game Changers" programme is expected to last at least 18 months, to the end of 2019. Some courses will start and end well within that time-frame. The trained and qualified recruits will then be expected to use the skills and experience gained with the Club to make us all fitter, faster and stronger!
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF MY APPLICATION HAS BEEN APPROVED?
As pointed out earlier, the number of registrations could be substantial. There will have to be a selection policy that enables us to choose the optimum number and range of prospective recruits. These will be invited for interview and we will then notify all the chosen recruits by a date to be announced in due course.
